Quick post about the new Star Trek movie - I saw it last night and it was fantastic. It's been quite a while since I left the cinema with such a warm fuzzy feeling from really enjoying a properly fun ride of a movie. It's been even longer since I left the cinema after seeing a Star Trek filming absolutely desperate to see the next one.
It's not perfect - there are some yawning plot holes, too many 'movie' coincidences, some awful and inconsistent 'movie' science, and I must admit to being a little unsure about Simon Pegg's Scotty. But none of that matters, because it has such relentless energy and spirit. The genius part of the story is the time-travel element which allows a complete re-boot of the characters lives. The Kirk, Spock, Bones et al from the original series are what these people would have been, but because of the events of this movie that's all now forever confined to be an 'alternate universe'. I was stunned by one (literally) catastrophic event in the film because it alters the entire Star Trek universe and fundamentally changes one of the main characters. I just can't wait to see where they take them next.
Finally the cast takes a great story and makes it work in a way I didn't think was possible. Kirk, Spock and McCoy are all the same but also different - they have a core of the familiar but with new dimensions that these new actors bring. I can't praise them enough.
When I first heard about a new Trek film recasting all the familiar characters as young cadets I didn't think it could possibly work - but boy was I wrong. This is a new Star Trek, dare I say a better Star Trek, and I for one hope this one lives long and prospers!
